A type of software solution that collects, analyzes, and correlates security event data from various sources, helping organizations detect and respond to security incidents. Implementing a SIEM solution can support PCI DSS compliance efforts by providing visibility into the security of the cardholder data environment.

Applies to. PCI DSS v4.0.1 never names SIEM. A SIEM is one common way to meet several Requirement 10 obligations at once: collecting audit logs from all system components, protecting them from change, reviewing them at least daily with automated mechanisms, and retaining them for 12 months with three months immediately available. It also usually provides the alert handling that the Requirement 12 incident response plan must cover for security monitoring systems.
Limits. Deploying a SIEM does not by itself satisfy Requirement 10; the assessor tests that logs are captured, protected, reviewed and retained, and that alerts are followed up, whatever product does it.
